Welling 2 Eastleigh 1

WELLING maintained their push for a Conference South play-off place with victory over Eastleigh on Saturday.

The Wings were indebted to skipper Jamie Day who struck a goal in either half to lead his side to victory.

Eastleigh started brightly and Des Boateng had to clear Steve West's 16th-minute header off the line.

Adrian Pennock's men took the lead six minutes before half-time when Leon Solomon's perfect cross picked out Day, who scored from close range.

The Wings doubled their advantage seven minutes into the second half when Jamie Turner's long free-kick fell to Day, who scored with a low left-foot shot from 20 yards.

Turner then made a good save to keep out Andy Forbes but the Eastleigh striker did pull a goal back with 15 minutes left.

Welling were forced back with Southampton-based referee Andy Davies giving a number of contentious decisions around the edge of the Wings penalty area.

But West's free-kick was blocked and Forbes fired over from close range as the Wings held on to close to within a point of fourth-placed Bishop's Stortford.
