ELLIS GREEN'S future hangs in the balance according to Welling player-manager Neil Smith.

Blue Square South rivals Eastleigh claimed last weekend that they had agreed a deal with the winger.

But the player trained with Welling on Saturday and Monday and is due to take part in the friendly against Charlton on Wednesday night at Park View Road.

Smith said: "I've given Ellis until the weekend to make his mind up. I've asked him what is going on because if a club declares that they have signed you then they don't do that at a drop of a hat.

"He can talk to other clubs but he is a local boy and I want him to stay at Welling."

Smith’s position has not been strengthened by Green's refusal to sign a contract with the Wings last season. He first came to the attention of Eastleigh during Welling's 3-1 win at Silverlake Stadium in August and is free to sign for any club this summer.

Striker Lloyd Blackman, who is due to play against Charlton, has also been offered a deal but midfielder Ian Selley is training at Lewes.

Smith, who released six trialists on Monday, is hoping to tie up a loan move with a forward currently at Millwall.

The Wings boss has named veteran midfielder Richard Carpenter as his new captain.

Smith said: "Richard can drive everybody forward, I want more from him than Welling saw last season because I think he played within himself."
