Former Villa striker joins the Gills

GILLINGHAM have clinched the signing of striker Darren Byfield after making a surprise swoop into the transfer market.

The 27-year-old former Aston Villa, Walsall and Rotherham player agreed a two-year deal following his release by Sunderland on a free transfer. While on Wearside he scored five goals in 17 games.

During his career, he also spent spells on loan Preston, Northampton, Cambridge and Blackpool. A Jamaican international, he made his debut two years ago in a friendly against South Africa. He is renowned for his blistering turn of pace.
