Gillingham 1 - Crewe Alex 0

GILLINGHAM moved above the 60-point mark for the season with a battling 1-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra at the Priestfield. A poor match will be best remembered for two penalties - one well taken and one horribly squirmed.

After a quiet opening period in which neither side seriously threatened to find a goal Gillingham took the lead on the stroke of half time from the penalty spot.

Marlon King calmly sidefooted the spot kick past Clayton Ince after Paul Smith was upended in the penalty area.

The 1-0 lead should have been cancelled out mid way through the second half when the referee controversially awarded Crewe a penalty following a 'foul' on Kevin Street.

But Crewe skipper Shaun Smith blasted the penalty out of the ground, much to the delight of the Gills fans who were equally delighted to hear the full time whistle after another home win.
