Gills take heart from Watford record

STAN TERNENT: Wants an improvement in away form
STAN TERNENT: Wants an improvement in away form

Watford v Gillingham

GILLINGHAM go to Watford on Saturday aiming to continue an impressive record, which has not seen them lose at Vicarage Road since 1978.

Gillingham manager Stan Ternent hopes the clubs fortunes against the Hornets continues as it has in recent seasons when they have twice beaten and twice drawn against the home side.

In the five seasons the two clubs have met in the Coca-Cola Championship the Gills have won four, drawn four and lost just the once back in May 2001.

But Ternent is aware Gillingham have struggled away from Priestfield this season.

He said: "Our away record this season is very poor and we have to improve on that. We have one or two injury concerns, but no suspensions. "Matty Jarvis and Danny Spiller are making pretty good progress, but Mark Saunders is a little further away from a return and Mamady Sidibe won’t be back for a month.

"Watford is not too far up the road so this is almost a derby match. They have dangerous players like midfielder Neal Ardley and strikers Heidar Helguson and Bruce Dyer. There are a good side, that’s what we have to aspire to."

Ternent’s side have not played since the Leicester defeat a fortnight ago, while Watford are fresh from the disappointment of semi-final Carling Cup defeat by Liverpool.

"The break has done us good as it helps injured players get fit. Watford have done fantastically well getting to the semi-final of a major competition, so it won’t be an easy time to play them as they only have the league to play for now."
