Peter Taylor was delighted to see the hard work pay off against Wolves.
The Gills made life hard for the promotion chasers and got their reward when Cody McDonald scored an injury-time winner.
Taylor said: “The players know what a big task it is to play here against clubs like Wolves. They know they have to put in extra work to get anything out of the game.
“We worked extremely hard as a team and in the end we had a bit of luck. They had more chances than us but we got the late goal and we get three points. We deserved it on the strength of the work the players put in.
“I have got a lot of respect for Kenny Jackett (the Wolves manager) and I know him well. His teams are always organised and they certainly were (on Friday).
“They have got very good players and we really had to defend as a team and a unit, otherwise they would just open us up all the time.
“At times, we had to concede certain areas, but I thought as a group of players we worked exceptionally hard.”
McDonald struck the only goal of the game with just seconds left but Taylor, whose side have been conceding late themselves recently, wasn’t relaxing until the full-time whistle went.
He said: “I didn’t move because I have seen things like that before and then all of a sudden you concede.
“The last thing I said to them was they might only be 30 seconds left but you have got to make sure you still do it right because people can still score in that time.
“We couldn’t have scored much later than that and with our record of conceding late goals, I think that’s what we need to be doing, scoring them as late as that.
“I was really pleased for Cody because he played very unselfishly for the team. He had to go wide right in the second half and he got rewarded with the goal.”
