Brentford 1 Gillingham 1

Simeon Jackson struck from the spot to earn Gillingham a point from their promotion clash at Brentford.

The Gills had fallen behind to a David Hunt free-kick but Jacksons strike sealed a deserved point for the visitors.

Brentford took the lead from their first real chance at goal when Hunt netted with a 42nd minute free-kick.

It was a half of few chances for either side but Gillingham thought they had equalised immediately after, when Mark McCammon played Simeon Jackson through, the striker netted but referee Fred Graham signalled for a foul in the build-up.

Jackson had Gillinghams closest effort of the half before that but blazed a chance wide with 31 minutes gone.

Mark McCammon headed a chance wide just seconds into the start of the second half as Gillingham emerged from the half-time interval full of life.

With just under an hour gone Gillingham got the lifeline they needed when Andy Barcham was tripped in the box and Jackson slotted home his 18th goal of the season to level the scores.

The Gills were enjoying the majority of possession but still had to be on their guard. Billy Clarke came close with a powerful long range effort and former Gravesend striker Charlie MacDonald dragged an effort wide.

Gillingham finished the game the stronger but were unable to get the winning goal they deserved.

Gillingham manager Mark Stimson said: I felt we deserved the three points.

Well take a point but were disappointed, because we didnt come for anything else, we went for the three points.

We didnt get them but we played very well and one will do us.

The boys will take a lot from the game. They know they deserved something from the game and if they hadnt got anything then I think it would have been tricky to pick them up.

Weve got six games left now and we have to focus on what we have to do and want to achieve.

If we play like that for the next six games Im sure we will win more than we lose and at the end of it we will all be celebrating with that army of supporters that we had with us, that was phenomenal.

We had around 1,800 in the ground but it sounded like 6,000 and they appreciated at the end what the boys put in. Ill have a lot better Sunday than I did the week before.
