Warwickshire v Kent

KENT made up for lost time on day three of their rain-ruined LV Championship match with Warwickshire and dismissed the hosts for 213 before going on to reach 108 for one in reply come the close.

Having seen the opening two days washed out by rain, Kent might have been forgiven for a lethargic performance when play finally got underway at 11am on Thursday, but Rob Key's men were clearly focussed in dismissing the hosts inside 60 overs and having lost the toss.

Former England swing bowler Martin Saggers was responsible for removing both Warwickshire openers Darren Maddy (8) and Kumar Sangakkara (26) then Yasir Arafat, Ryan McLaren and Lasith Malinga bagged one apiece to leave the Bears in tatters come the first interval.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, it was home skipper Maddy who became the first victim, caught behind by Geraint Jones after edging a defensive push shot.

Sri Lankan left-hander Sangakkara was then squared up by a Saggers leg-cutter which he nicked to second slip where van Jaarsveld took the first of his catches.

Jonathan Trott (10) then aimed an expansive drive at Yasir Arafat to again pick out van Jaarsveld and, after the loss of three overs to rain, Alex Loudon (14) drove loosely at McLaren only to see van Jaarsveld dive high to his right and claim a spectacular one-handed catch again at second slip.

Then, in the lunch over, Tim Ambrose (2) pushed at a Malinga leg-cutter to edge to van Jaarsveld, who this time pocketed a regulation chance.

Matters might have been even worse for Warwickshire had Jones held on to a superb diving attempt to dismiss left-hander Jim Troughton.

Driving hard at McLaren, Troughton, on eight, got an inside edge that brushed Jones's right glove as he dived full-length to his right only for the ball to fly down to fine leg for a boundary.

Troughton went into lunch unbeaten 22, but had added only 14 more to his tally when he went leg before to McLaren. Pushing outside the line of a leg-cutter with bat firmly behind pad, umpire Allan Jones had little hesitation in upholding McLaren's lbw appeal.

Though Luke Parker went on to top score with 49 from 75 balls, he nicked a Mclaren leg-cutter to give van Jaarsveld his fifth catch (so equalling Kent's championship record for an out-fielder) then, with his next ball McLaren snared Adam Shantry leg before to give himself the chance of a second Edgbaston hat-trick in as many weeks.

Lee Daggett just about survived that by playing and missing, but van Jaarsveld then took the ball and dismissed him with his fifth ball of the day to complete the home innings by 4pm.

In a long last session, Kent batted sublimely against the new ball through Rob Key (56 not out) and Joe Denly (31), but their opening stand ended with the score on 82 when Loudon pulled off a stunning catch in the gulley from a sliced Denly drive off Streak.

Once the hardness went off the new ball, Key and van Jaarsveld found scoring that little bit harder, but there were few alarms as they went into stumps having added a further 26.
