A SPECTACULAR late save by Margate goalkeeper Phil Smith earned the England National Game XI Under-23 side a 2-2 draw with Belgium under-20s at Darlington last night.

Smith, on as a substitute, touched a powerful close range shot onto his post in the dying seconds as Belgium almost snatched the win.

England came from behind twice at the Reynolds Arena in Darlington in front of a record crowd for the team of 3,166.

Telford United's Sam Ricketts and Shrewsbury's Luke Rodgers, with a fine free-kick ,got the England goals.

Manager Paul Fairclough told TheFA.com: "The players never gave in and were technically not far off some players who are very likely to be playing for Belgium in the next World Cup. They should be hugely proud of themselves."
