Mark McCammon faces a race against time to be fit for the start of the season.

The big Gillingham striker picked up a hamstring injury during the club’s trip to La Manga but is hoping to be back before pre-season ends.

"I’m making steady progress and hopefully I’ll be back within a week to 10 days," he said. "I’m going to push for the Ipswich and Birmingham games and I’ve got to keep training and progress as quickly as possible.

"I’ll need three or four games to get fit and that’s why hopefully I’ll get back next week and I’ll be ready for the start of the season. It’s a good target for me and I should be there or there abouts."

McCammon trained before the Grays game along with fellow injured players Nicky Southall and Luis Cumbers.

He said: "It’s been frustrating sitting in the stands but I’m keen to get started."
