Gillingham's reserve team suffered a 2-1 defeat to Brighton on Wednesday night in Lewes.

Highly-rated youth team player Luke Rooney scored Gillingham’s late consolation in the Combination League fixture.

The midfielder scored a free-kick with five minutes to go with a shot that cannoned in off the underside of the bar.

Among the Gillingham team were a number of trialists including Arsenal left-back Rene Steer and experienced defender Sagi Burton, who has been training with the club for several weeks.

Irish midfielder Stephen O’Donnell and former Crystal Palace winger Ryan Hall, who is currently with Blue Square South side Bromley, were also among the starters as Gills manager Mark Stimson took a chance to look at a few new faces.
