Scally: Experience is vital

Paul Scally won't be appointing an up and coming manager

GILLINGHAM chairman Paul Scally has ruled out appointing another inexperienced manager this time around.

The club needs instant results, if it is to battle for promotion, and Mr Scally believes the only way to get that is by appointing an experienced figure.

“We need someone who is experienced and who has worked in these divisions and knows what it is about,” he said.

“I won’t be taking a young up and coming new manager again at this stage.”

Mr Scally gave Ronnie Jepson and Andy Hessenthaler their first chance at management.

But both their tenures ended in similar circumstances and now the Gills chairman is keen to turn to the tried and tested.

Gillingham won Saturday’s game against Brighton under the stewardship of Iffy Onuora and Mick Docherty and both are keen on the job.

The popular choice among the fans would be former Brentford and Leicester manager Martin Allen.

He has already proved himself in League 1 and only a clash of personalities with the Leicester chairman cost him his job in the Championship.
