PAUL SCALLY: "Considering the millions he could be worth, it's derisory"

GILLINGHAM chairman Paul Scally has branded the compensation awarded by an FA tribunal as "derisory", following youngster Ryan Bertrand’s move to Chelsea.

Depending on appearances, the cash-strapped Gills could receive up to £575,000 for the 16-year-old but the Gills chairman feels his club have been shortchanged.

Mr Scally said: "It’s ridiculous really. He was here since he was nine and we haven’t received market value. Premier League clubs can take our kids before 17 and make paltry offers. Considering the millions he could be worth, it’s derisory."

The Premiership champions had originally offered just £50,000. On Tuesday, Chelsea were ordered to pay Gillingham £125,000 down plus £50,000 when he makes his first team debut.

Gillingham will receive a further £100,000 for every 10 games he plays up to 40 matches and 15 per cent of any sell-on fee.
