Sheringham brace leads Welling to victory

St Albans 2 Welling 3

A timely brace from leading scorer Charlie Sheringham ended Welling's four-game winless run on Tuesday night.

The Wings let a two-goal lead slip in Blue Square South at St Albans but hit back to grab maximum points thanks to Sheringham's 87th-minute winner.

Welling had controlled the game for long periods but pressed the self-destruct button before bouncing back to win.

They went ahead after nine minutes when Sheringham collected Graeme Andrews' fine pass and beat two players before setting up Sanchez Ming to fire home from 25 yards.

It was 2-0 just after the half-hour when Sonny Cobbs' positive run was ended in the penalty area by substitute Chris Seeby and Sheringham sent keeper Paul Bastock the wrong way from the spot.

Seemingly in control with loan keeper David Wilkinson looking assured for Welling, they then conceded two goals in 10 minutes.

Just after the hour, Ryan Johnson's misplaced pass allowed Paul Hakim to race clear and score.

Then the Wings back four went missing again to let substitute Sam Hurrell - the first winner of Sky's Football Icon programme in 2005 - get in behind and produce a neat finish.

Welling appeared to be holding on for a point but one moment of brilliance from Ming on the right opened up the home defence and his precise cross was smashed home by Sheringham with three minutes left.

"It was hard coming," said Welling boss Andy Ford. "I had a feeling that three goals were going to do it.

"There were some good things to come out of the game. We looked good in the first half, Gavin Dayes did well for us but had to come off with a hamstring problem.

"It was a great move for the winning goal. That's the ability we have in the squad, a good one-two between Lee Blackburn and Sanchez Ming and a great finish from Charlie Sheringham."
