Stimson: Promotion remains in our hands

Gillingham v Macclesfield

Gillingham will be looking to get their promotion charge back on track on Saturday against lowly Macclesfield.

The Gills are without a win in three League 2 outings and have slipped to 10th in the table but manager Mark Stimson believes promotion remains in their hands.

“There are 45 points to play for so it’s still in our hands,” he said. “We just have to make sure we don’t have to rely on anybody else.

“Last season we had to rely on other teams doing other things to survive. It’s not the same situation this year but it’s about us taking the opportunity and getting these points in the bag and enjoying the last few games of the season.”

Stimson could hand Mark McCammon his first start in almost four months after an encouraging second-half showing against Aldershot as replacement for Gary Mulligan.

“It was good to see him get a goal and nice to see him out on the pitch,” said the Gills boss. “He did all right for his first 45 minutes for a long while and he has given himself an opportunity for the weekend.”

Mulligan damaged his groin and is unlikely to recover by the weekend.

Simon King will go straight back in the side if he recovers from an ankle injury.
