CHARLTON are likely to look within the game for Peter Varney’s successor as chief executive.

Derek Chappell, new chairman of the club’s plc, confirmed that the recruitment process was already underway and disclosed: “It is likely to be someone at the same level within the game.

“He has big shoes to fill and it’s important we get it right. Essentially we’ll be looking to appoint someone who can fully understand the ethos of Charlton Athletic Football Club.

“To quote my fellow director, Richard Murray, without our community involvement we would be just another football club. Ideally, we would like someone in place, working alongside Peter, before he leaves at the end of June.”

Interviewing will be conducted by Mr Chappell, Mr Murray and Bob Whitehand, all members of the plc board.
