PAUL BOOTH: Gave Welling a 10th minute lead

Thurrock 1 Welling 1

WELLING gained a creditable point at promotion chasing Thurrock on Saturday.

Wings took the lead after 10 minutes when Jamie Day’s corner fell for Paul Booth at the far post and he rattled home via the underside of the crossbar.

Thurrock were gifted an equaliser on 24 minutes. There appeared little danger from a long ball into the Welling penalty area but defender James Smith handled and referee Andrew Parker pointed to the spot. Glenn Poole fired home the penalty.

Booth nearly restored the Wings’ lead six minutes into the second half. Neat interplay between Martin Carthy and Lee Spiller set up Booth, but his right foot shot was turned over by home keeper Andy Woodman.

Thurrock should have been reduced to 10 men on 58 minutes but former Charlton youngster Dave Collins was only cautioned for an off-the-ball elbow on Spiller.

Both sides nearly won it late on as Ian Wiles went close for Welling before Thurrock captain Jimmy McFarlane headed wide at the other end.
