A gay couple were left shaken after a yob hurled a lump of ham at them from a passing car.
Wheelchair user Danielle Honey and partner Katie Curtin were returning from a shopping trip to Morrisons in Larkfield when the attacker struck.
Laden with delicious treats in preparation for a quiet night in watching the X Factor, the pair were happily travelling along New Hythe Lane when a light blue car suddenly pulled up to them and a front seat passenger yelled “boo” before launching the meat at them.
It struck Miss Honey, who suffers from dystonia, a condition that brings on muscle spasms from the neck down, on her arm.
The impact of the meat, believed to have come from a Dairlylea Lunchables box, left a red, circular mark on her skin.
The 33-year-old said: “It came at me with such force, it hurt a lot. I was so shocked and surprised.
“When my partner picked it up I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It left a mark which is still a bit sensitive now and, combined with my condition, it’s not pleasant.
“It was such a stupid thing to do, I nearly veered into the road.”
Miss Curtin, her partner of 18 months, gripped the wheelchair’s handles and hurt her ankles as she stopped it swerving into the road.
The car, thought to be a Ford KA, pulled up two metres away and the reverse lights came on, but the driver drove off without confrontation.
The 23-year-old said: “I was so angry. When they stopped I did use some fruity language but then the lights came on, which got me worried.
“I thought there was going to be trouble. They obviously thought it was funny.
“They must have done it because Dan’s disabled, or because she looks like a stereotypical lesbian – which some men don’t like.
“If anyone knows anything that can help find these morons I would really appreciate it.”
The assault on the couple, who plan to marry next year, is being investigated by police.
Anyone with information about the incident, which happened around 3.30pm on Sunday, is asked to contact 101.
