Maidstone: Pair from Gillingham and Chatham arrested after assault outside Strawberry Moons, Gabriel's Hill

Two employees at a Maidstone nightclub were left with serious injuries following an early morning assault.

A man in his 20s was left with a severely broken jaw and has since had a titanium plate fitted, while a young woman had her nose broken and also needed hospital treatment following the attack at 3.30am on Saturday.

The pair were part of a group of four Strawberry Moons’ staff to be approached outside the Gabriel’s Hill premises by two men after their shift.

One suspect reportedly tried to grab a bicycle from one of the victims before punching him several times in the head.

Police were called and a 17-year-old from Chatham and a 19-year-old man from Gillingham were arrested on suspicion of assault.

They have been bailed until Saturday, August 29, pending further investigations.

At the time of the incident every street light on Gabriel’s Hill had been off for two weeks.

Business owners believe electrical work caused the issue and said it makes the busy night-time route a haven for trouble.

General manager of Strawberry Moons, Rik Johnson, said: “We informed the council about the problem as soon as it happened. It is really dangerous and needs to be sorted out. Luckily the lights we operate are still working and so we have CCTV footage of the attack.

“Despite them being notified two weeks ago nothing has been done.”

Paul Alcock, from Urban Blue medical bus which is based in the town to help late night revellers, also said complaints had been made to the local authority.

He added: “All the lights have been out for the last two weeks which has made the area dangerous, which is not conducive to the night time economy.

“The problem was reported to Kent County Council when it was noticed and so far nothing has happened. We now send our volunteers down in groups of three.”

However, KCC denied any complaint had been made and said all of its lights were working.
