Dumper truck vandals target sports field

VANDALS rode a stolen dumper truck around a school sports field and flattened goal posts. But a planned county-wide rugby tournament there will still go ahead.

About £200 worth of damage was caused when the vandals struck at Oakwood Park Grammar School, Maidstone, overnight between Monday and Tuesday.

However, the school will continue with plans to host the Kent County emerging schools competition, featuring Year Eight students from 11 schools from around the county, on Wednesday February 9, with the help of other schools who have promised to lend equipment.

Oakwood’s business manager, Mike Cutler, said: “We are having some work done on site, which is an extension to the school and new offices.

“Someone took a dumper truck up to the playing field area and decided to ram the posts. It was just a one-off - just one of those things.

“It’s a big complex because we share the site with other schools, so if one or two people with intent can come in and cause all manner of damage. All the organisations in this complex do have this problem.”

“We are going to go ahead with next Wednesday’s tournament as planned. We can pool resources with friends.

CCTV recordings taken on the night have been handed to police who are continuing their investigations. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Maidstone and Malling Police on 01622 608189.
