Summer may have only just ended but stars at the Hazlitt Theatre in Maidstone are already getting ready for Christmas.
The cast of Peter Pan were all smiles as they launched this year’s pantomime last Thursday.
Moving across from Albert Square to Neverland, former EastEnders actor Ricky Groves is heading up the cast at the Earl Street venue.
The 47-year-old, who left the BBC One show in 2009 after nine years portraying hopeless romantic Garry Hobbs, plays villain Captain Hook in JM Barrie’s childhood classic.
“I am really looking forward to exploring the character and having fun with the family audiences,” said Ricky.
“Captain Hook is such a great role to play and Peter Pan is a fantastic, timeless story that has something in it for all ages to enjoy.
“I have played a baddie once before so I can’t wait for audiences to give me a boo and a hiss – it’s all part of the traditional magic we love.”
Appearing alongside Ricky is actor Jordan Veloso. The dance teacher, who runs classes for Razzamataz Theatre Schools at the YMCA in Melrose Close, Maidstone, will be Peter
Pan.
The show is choreographed by Lorna Thomas from Aylesford, a dance teacher at the Caroline Clare Dance School in Borough Green.
Chorus and dance auditions were held earlier this month with more than 300 hopefuls competing for 60 roles.
This year’s production is the first time the panto will be produced by theatre staff, employed by Parkwood Theatres, rather than bringing in an outside company.
Peter Pan runs from Friday, December 4, until Sunday, January 3. To book, phone 01622 758611.
