The A21 near Lambershurst was shut south-bound while emergency services dealt with a number of incidents on the road, including one involving an ambulance.

The ambulance involved was on its way to help deal with a crash involving two cars between Lamberhurst and Kippings Cross in which three people were hurt.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "The ambulance wasn't carrying any patients and there were no other vehicles involved. The crew were not injured and the vehicle has been recovered.

"Paramedics were already on the scene of a two-car collision. Three patients had to be taken to the Kent and Sussex hospital in Tunbridge Wells. Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening."

The road has since reopened but a police spokesman urged motorists to avoid the area as it is still heavily congested.

Black ice on other roads in the area means police are also advising road users to only travel if necessary.

They said in a statement: "Icy conditions are also affecting all the main routes in the county, including the A2, M2, A20, M20 and a lot of the A roads between Canterbury and Thanet and the north of the county.

"Several road traffic collisions have already been reported and police have asked drivers to slow down and take extra care as they make their way to work this morning."

Roads affected as of 11am were:

  • Valley Road between Brands Hatch and Longfield/Fawkham, congested following a road traffic collision
  • A2, Canterburyreopened following closure after collisions
  • M20 – Junctions 11-13 in south Kent have road trafficcrashes on both carriageways. Open but heavily congested
