Video shows mouse in Mix Grill 91 takeaway in Week Street, Maidstone

A takeaway owner has vowed to call pest control after a video showed a mouse scurrying across the premises.

Mukhtar Hussain, owner of Mix Grill 91, in Week Street, Maidstone, said the appearance of the furry creature was a "one off" and blamed it on the fact pest control hadn't been since the start of December.

The footage, taken earlier this week and sent to KentOnline, shows a mouse on the floor. The camera then tilts up to show the Mix Grill 91 logo.

Mr Hussain said he did not know about the mouse's existence until KentOnline told him about the video.

He said that because of the pandemic, the business had not been opened as regularly as before, and that is another reason why the mouse appeared.

He said that pest control is supposed to visit the business every month and put bait down for any pests, but that has not been happening the during the pandemic.

The last time pest control came was at the end of the second lockdown in December.

Mr Hussain rang pest control a month ago but no visit was made. He also tried to ring pest control yesterday to book their regular visit, he said.

Upon hearing about the mouse, "We have never had this before. We have to do something about it, and see what pest control says."

The video was sent to Maidstone Borough Council (MBC), prompting a visit from council officers.

A council spokesperson said: "MBC's environmental health team is aware of the complaint and video regarding Mix Grill 91.

"MBC officers have undertaken visits to ensure the business is taking steps to prevent pests from entering the premises.

"The council is working with the business to implement improvements to prevent a reoccurrence of this incident which may be subject to potential legal action."

The takeaway is no stranger to controversy.

In March last year Mr Hussain was given a jail sentence of 120 days, suspended for a year, and ordered to pay £3,694 by Maidstone magistrates after he admitted using banned liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to cook with.

Officers from MBC discovered the gas bottles in the cellar powering the cooking range.

They also found poor structural conditions, no food safety management system and no hot water.

The authority immediately served the restaurant with a prohibition notice to stop serving food because the gas bottles posed a serious risk of injury.

The shop's current hygiene rating is 3 but in 2019 it was give a zero.
