FIELDS of corn are plentiful at this time of year but one of them has an additional point of interest.

A strange crop circle appeared in a field between Sandling and Boxley, Maidstone, some time during the night of Saturday, July 16 and the early hours of the morning on Sunday, July 17, but how it was made remains a mystery.

The formation – estimated at 180ft to 200ft wide – can be seen from the M20 and from Boxley Road and has attracted many visitors.

It has also been placed on several crop circle websites, where enthusiasts have been discussing its layout and the techniques used to make it, trying to decide if it is a hoax or whether it has been created by an alien force.

Claire Sullivan and Iris Neel, of Eccles, spotted the circle as they were driving along the motorway and decided to take a closer look.

Miss Sullivan said: "Although we have seen them on television and in the papers before we have never seen one for real so we went to have a look.

"It is fascinating to see the way the corn is lying down flat but it isn’t broken at all, and there are flattened bits in the middle of circles of corn with no sign as to how they were made."

Miss Neel added: "I am not sure that I believe in other forces but it is very strange and inexplicable.

"I think the whole thing is very interesting whether they are man-made or not."
