Prison dishes up success

Bangers and cash was served up by enterprising offenders at a women's prison.

Inmates at East Sutton Park made record profits from its sale of sausages last year.

A report on the jail, near Maidstone, revealed sales from farm goods notched up more than £100,000.

Produce was snapped up by shoppers at local farmers' markets and the open prison shop itself.

The report, by the members of the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB), found that offenders enjoyed the work, although it could be demanding at times.

"Interestingly, the women who have been the victims of physical abuse find the tactile nature of the work has a calming and therapeutic effect," the report states.

The open prison, which houses 94 women and six young offenders, has also managed to cut its food bill by 5p a day per inmate, going from £1.90 to £1.85.
