Tonbridge Angels set off on a pre-season trip to Newcastle on Friday morning, with boss Tommy Warrilow joking: "There must be somewhere closer to get a drink!"

Angels are staying in a city centre hotel and will be partying at the weekend. But first there are friendlies against north east sides Bedlington on Friday and Blyth Spartans on Saturday to take care of.

Warrilow (pictured) said: "The main thing is not to pick up any injuries but we want to get something useful out of the two games.

"Once they’re done and dusted the players will be out on the town letting their hair down. I’ll probably be getting a late-night call from them. I better put my phone on silent!"

Trialists John Scarborough, Mark Lovell, Mitchell Hyland and Billy-Joe King will be joining Angels in Newcastle.

Warrilow will soon make a decision on who to keep on. He said: "It’s a really tough one. They’re all good lads but they’re playing for maybe one place.

"We’ve helped them out and they’ve helped us out because there’s been times when we’ve been short in friendlies and would have been stuck without them.

"John’s an experienced centre-half and we know what Mark’s capable of up front.

"Mitchell was offered a deal at Southend but he was realistic about his chances there. He’s a central midfielder but he can also play right-back.

"Billy has pedigree having started out at Chelsea before suffering injuries. He’s a left-back but can also play higher up the pitch so there’s plenty for me to think about."

Tonbridge travel to Ryman League Premier Division side Concord Rangers on Tuesday night.
