YouTube: How you saw the Aylesford fire

by Rob Bailey

Shoppers and stunned passers by took stunning videos of the Aylesford Homebase blaze as it raged on Saturday.

The movie clips have now become a sensation on YouTube, with dozens of videos capturing the drama as firefighters battled the inferno.

Police admitted today that the damage at the store, at the Quarry Wood industrial estate, is so bad that the building may not be safe to enter until the end of the week.

Paul Graham, from Aylesford, took this stunning video of the blaze - showing thick smoke billowing across the A20 and large chunks of ash falling on the road. Incredibly, motorists continue to drive through it.

One shopper standing in the store's car park took this video of firefighters at work.

They had to battle the fire from the outside as the temperatures inside the building were too high - hitting 600C at its peak, enough to buckle the building's steel frame.

Another shopper caught these dramatic pictures of flames coming through the side of the building.

The smoke plume could be seen for miles around - captured here from the North Downs.

Another camera caught more pictures of the inferno, but also shows other people in the car parks taking videos and pictures of the flames - a sign of the rise of "citizen journalism". Did you witness the fire? Send your pictures and video to messengernews@thekmgroup.co.uk
