Kevin Lokko scored an injury-time winner as Maidstone beat Boreham Wood in Jay Saunders’ 300th game in charge.
There was a touch of fortune about it as Lokko helped a deep free-kick from Jamie Coyle back across goal, only to see the ball drop in.
There'd been little between the sides over 90 minutes although with the hosts finishing strongly, a point would have been a decent result.
Stones are up to 14th in the National League after their first clean sheet of the season.
Saunders sprang a surprise by starting with a back three.
It meant a first appearance of the season for Coyle, partnering Lokko and Anthony Acheampong, with Reece-Hall Johnson and Tom Mills the wing-backs.
James Rogers, Jack Evans and Ben Greenhalgh made up a three-man midfield, while Alex Flisher and Tom Murphy were paired up front.
Greenhalgh saw a cross come back off the post inside two minutes of a fairly comfortable first half for the visitors.
The back three looked nice and solid with Wood reduced to several shots from distance by Angelo Balanta and Aaron Kuhl, either high and wide or easily dealt with by Lee Worgan.
At the other end a promising counter-attack, led by Murphy, came to nothing, while Evans fired well over after Flisher’s long throw was cleared to the edge of the box.
Towards the end of the half a giant clearing header by Acheampong fell to Flisher whose 25-yard strike was touched wide by Grant Smith diving low to his left.
Lokko almost had the ball in the net from the resultant corner.
Stones had a big chance to open the scoring early in the second half, Murphy doing well to create the opening after Flisher met a Lokko free-kick but firing over.
Balanta’s first-time effort was held by Worgan at the other end while substitute Conor Clifford saw his 25-yard strike flash wide.
As the game started to open up Coyle got the run on his man at a Greenhalgh corner but headed over.
An injury to Acheampong on the hour saw Maidstone revert to a back four, Bobby-Joe Taylor taking his place in a reshuffle.
Wood were now finding it easier to get at United, Kenny Davis hitting the bar with a header from Adriano Moke’s cross with 15 minutes left.
The late pressure was coming from Wood but there remained a shortage of clear-cut chances, although substitute Morgan Ferrier almost squeezed a strike through Worgan’s legs with his first touch.
Dan Sweeney powered a header over from a Flisher long throw in the last couple of minutes.
That looked to be Stones' best chance of a winner but there was still time for Lokko.
