Alex Flisher doubts he will ever get back to his form of three seasons ago – but feels full-time football will help.

Maidstone return to Wrexham today (Good Friday) for the first time since facing the Welshmen in an FA Cup second-round tie in December 2014.

Flisher scored the Stones goal in a 3-1 defeat that night but a week later suffered the knee injury which sidelined him for 10 months.

He’d scored 16 goals in half a season and was linked with Football League moves before the injury.

The 24-year-old has worked hard to get back to his best but fitness has been an issue.

He said: “That goal at Wrexham went in off my belly, although I didn’t really have a belly then. Now, it’s a different story!

“Back then, that was probably the best I’ve played throughout my career and there were rumours about going to league clubs and a week later I got injured.

“It’s a game I’ll always remember but things have changed.

“I don’t think I’ll ever be what I was then but I can try and get as close as possible.

“It’s just one of them. When you’re scoring goals week in, week out, you’re fit, you’re sharp and it’s a confidence thing as well.

“You got more chances in the Ryman League than you do at this level, so you’re always going to stand out a bit more.”

Maidstone are going full-time next season and Flisher, who works as a carpenter in his dad’s business, is sure that will help.

He said: “I’ll keep working throughout the summer and hopefully next season, with

full-time football as well, it gives you a chance to get a bit fitter.

“At the moment I’m getting up at 5am every day, working for eight hours on a building site.

“In the long run it might be better going full-time so hopefully I can get back to where I was before I got injured.

“I’ve spoken to my dad. He’s just said you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.

“It’s a chance to go full-time which when you set out as a youngster is what you want to do.

“The knee’s not a problem, it’s just my fitness. I seem to yoyo.”

Stones were two leagues below Wrexham when they met in the FA Cup.

Now they are only four points behind them in the National League – a sign of the club’s progress.

Flisher said: “We go back with a different perspective.

“We were a Ryman League club then, it was the biggest ground some of us had played in and you’re playing a team who are two leagues higher.

“We can go there now with confidence we can win whereas before we were going there as underdogs in the FA Cup.

“It came up on my Timehop on Facebook that it was six years since we played Tooting & Mitcham away and we won 4-3 after being 3-1 down.

“You look at where we were then and where we are now and it’s a joke.

“The way the ground’s progressed and the way the team’s progressed, if you’d said six years later we’d be playing in the Conference we’d have laughed at you but that’s the way it’s gone and credit to the owners and Jay.

“It’s incredible the way it’s gone and what we’re doing now.”
