Fog stops play in Stones game

MAIDSTONE United fans were left queuing for refund vouchers after their crunch Kent League clash with VCD Athletic was called off at half-time.

Thick fog at Central Park reduced visibility to less than 50 metres and with referee Lee Venamore unable to see his linesmen during a half-time pitch inspection, the game was abandoned, with the score at 1-1.

VCD had taken the lead in the fourth minute, with Matt Rusell taking advantage of some statuesque defending to lash in the opening goal.

But the Stones equalised a minute before the break when Barry Jeffreys freed Aaron Lacey on the right. His cross sparked a goalmouth melee and in the confusion Steve Hogg headed in the equaliser

That was the game’s final act, as with visibility worsening supporters were left queuing for vouchers for the rearranged fixture, at a date to be announced.
