Maidstone United manager Harry Wheeler takes 'biggest pleasure' from response at Ebbsfleet

Harry Wheeler praised Maidstone's response after falling behind at Ebbsfleet.

United had lost all four games under Wheeler after conceding the first goal.

But that changed on Tuesday night when Will De Havilland cancelled out Kenny Clark's second-half opener.

Stones boss Wheeler said: "I said to the boys, that’s my biggest pleasure, coming from behind, having that reaction and mentality.

"I felt a couple of weeks ago the heads dropped and I don’t like that.

"You’ve got to believe. The game’s all about belief and psychology and you’ve got to believe till the end.

"They did that today and got their rewards."

Wheeler sprang a surprise by naming centre-half Alex Finney at right-back, dropping Seth Nana Twumasi.

Finney ended up back in the middle after debutant Rob Swaine went off injured but Wheeler thought the experiment worked.

He said: "I thought he did really well. I look at attributes of full-backs and I think he’s got that.

"He was a little bit apprehensive before the game but he did really well.

"I rang him on Monday and said, 'look, this is what we're going to do tomorrow.'

"He said, ‘OK, I’ve never played there,’ and we spoke about some little bits and he did a very good job.

"He’s a good athlete and he did a good job against, in my opinion, one of the best wide players in the league in Luke Coulson."

Wheeler also liked the look of Swaine before he was forced off with a calf injury.

The boss said: "You could see first half why we brought him in.

"He was like a magnet to the ball in the box, won everything and made some vital headers.

"We rushed him back a little bit. He had a calf strain, he felt he could do it and in the warm-up he was fine.

"Then just before half-time he said if he carries on he’ll probably be out for a while, so we took him off.

"I think he’ll be OK but it was precautionary."
