Maidstone United wait for news on injured captain Blair Turgott after Eastleigh defeat

Maidstone face an anxious wait to discover the extent of Blair Turgott's knee injury.

Fifteen-goal leading scorer Turgott went off before half-time against Eastleigh on Tuesday night.

He could be a doubt for Saturday's FA Cup second-round tie against Oldham while United desperately need his goals as they bid to get out of trouble in the National League.

The Stones struggled without their main man as a poor performance was punished by the Spitfires.

Manager Harry Wheeler said: "He heard something go in his knee.

"We’re not sure how serious it is yet.

"We don’t know if he’ll be available Saturday but he was a big loss.

"It’s difficult without him. If you go and play deeper when you’re under pressure second half, you don’t have that threat on the counter without Blair. It was disappointing all round."

Wheeler was angry with the defending in Maidstone's latest defeat, with all three Eastleigh goals coming from set-pieces.

He said: "You can’t defend set-pieces like that, can you?

"We work on it all week, we know all of theirs, every one they do.

"The first one's taken a deflection but the second two are embarrassing and there’s no one hurting more than the lads in there and us.

"First half, apart from the set-piece, I don’t think there’s much in it.

"Second half, it's the bravery of some players to come and play a little higher - we played so deep.

"We’re trying to get them out, they don’t listen, they don’t come up.

"We went on a run of four really tough fixtures unbeaten and the last two they turn up like that.

"Sometimes there’s no longevity in certain people’s quality."

Maidstone have won only once in nine league games and Wheeler has vowed to keep making changes.

He said: "Everyone we’ve brought in has been a good character and people that have stayed here have been good characters.

"But suddenly we see after two losses some people seem to lose their way and it’s bitterly disappointing.

"There’s a lot more work for us to do and all we can do is apologise again to the fans because they don’t deserve that. That’s not good enough.

"I do what I’ve got to do and go and be busy again. Go and start being busier and strengthening and trying to put more and more into the lads.

"That’s all you can do, work harder. We’re not going to run away from anything.

"We told them in there, we need them to step up a little bit now and face it.

"When you do get pressure or fans voice their opinion, take it. You’re all happy when people are praising you so you’ve got to take it the other way as well.

"I can protect the players all the time but after that second half, I can’t protect all of them. They’ve got to be stronger than that. It’s just not good enough."
