Maidstone eased relegation worries with a terrific performance against AFC Fylde.
Blair Turgott scored United’s first-half winner as Jay Saunders’ side put Tuesday night’s disappointment at Solihill to bed.
Saunders promised changes after the midweek defeat and delivered five in a switch to 4-3-3.
Out went Seth Nana Twumasi, Reece Prestedge, Jai Reason, Delano Sam-Yorke and Greg Luer and in came Josh Hare, Michael Phillips, Turgott, Jamar Loza and Andre Coker.
This was Coker’s first chance to play through the middle and he was brilliant in a first-half performance that was chalk and chesse from Solihull.
Coker’s a big guy, but he’s about pace, power and skill rather than a targetman and, as a result, United stuck to their football.
They were excellent to watch, playing exciting football, working hard and getting after Fylde, with the front three of Coker, Loza and Turgott supported by the energy of Michael Phillips and Stuart Lewis.
The Stones should have had a seventh-minute penalty when Phillips was taken down by Luke Burke running on to a Lewis pass.
And while prolific Danny Rowe went close with a deflected shot off Will De Havilland at the other end, the half was all about Maidstone.
Turgott had a shot saved after exchanging passes with Loza and cutting inside as Maidstone carved out several good openings.
And it was Turgott who broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute, intercepting a pass from from Simon Grand, charging down the right and cutting inside before finding the far corner with a superb finish.
A brilliant Coker run from deep that left defenders trailing deserved a goal but keeper Jay Lynch saved with his legs.
Loza then brought a good save from Lynch after combining with Lewis and Coker and, from the corner, Alex Wynter’s powerful header was blocked on the line.
Fylde had a couple of good chances, to keep the Stones on their toes, Lee Worgan saving well after space opened up for Jonny Smith and Phillips diverting Jake Lawlor’s shot over after James Hardy’s corner was pulled back to the edge of the box.
Fylde had a good spell after the break with Smith wide and seeing another strike go over off Alex Finney, then dangerman Rowe’s effort from a corner was blocked by De Havilland.
But Maidstone went close on the hour when a well-worked free-kick between Lewis and Turgott saw Anderson’s 20-yard cracker hit the inside of the post.
Turgott overhit a pass with Loza waiting for a tap-in as Maidstone created another good chance with 15 minutes left.
The dominance of the first half may not have been there but the commitment certainly was as Saunders’ men defended well, backed by a noisy home crowd.
