Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders explains what Vas Karagiannis and Dan Sweeney bring to the table

Maidstone boss Jay Saunders wants new signings Vas Karagiannis and Dan Sweeney to shake players out of their comfort zone.

United may be second in their first season in National League South but a return of 20 goals in as many games concerns Saunders.

He’s acted by signing 13-goal striker Karagiannis from Leatherhead and Dulwich Hamlet midfielder Sweeney, who scored six times in his first six games at Champion Hill.

Saunders said: “Hopefully they’ll offer us a bit more in the final third.

"Vas is someone I’ve been chasing for ages.

“His goal record is very good. All right, it’s in the league below but I’m confident he can come here and have an effect on us.

“You see in training this week, everything he tries to do, he tries to be positive and I think we need that.

“I think we’ve got too many people now who are playing it a little bit safe and when there’s a chance to shoot, not shooting because I feel they’re worrying about things.

"Dan’s someone I’ve liked. I had a chat with him in the summer.

"He’s someone that can score goals, he’s a good size, he’s comfortable on the ball and I just feel they’ll add a bit more quality to us.

“They’ve got every chance of coming straight in the team.

"I don’t think there’s enough people who've warranted keeping their shirt."

The new arrivals mean Saunders may look at cutting his squad.

He added: "With those two coming in we’ll look at it but it’s a busy period coming up so we’ve got to keep everyone around us if we can but if you start having three or four sitting in the stands it becomes a bit silly."
