Michael Cottington, from Kings Hill, jailed for stabbing girlfriend at West Malling home

A woman’s home resembled a scene from a horror film after she was stabbed by her bullying boyfriend, a court heard.

Michael Cottington knifed her in the shoulder and thigh after menacingly standing over her daughter’s cot holding the weapon.

“Blood was all over the walls and floors, so much so that police were unable to avoid treading in it,” prosecutor Benjamin Burge told Maidstone Crown Court.

“It resembled a scene from a horror film with blood smeared all over the walls, blood all over the defendant’s shoes and obviously all over her body.”

Cottington, of Durello Avenue, Kings Hill, was jailed for six years and eight months after admitting causing grievous bodily harm with intent and assault causing actual bodily harm.

A judge said he behaved “like a gibbering wreck” once he realised the seriousness of what he had done.

“You begged her not to call police,” he added. “It was cowardice upon cowardice. But for her, she will never forget this trauma. It is hoped that one day her daughter will.”

Cottington became violent to the victim at her West Malling home on December 2 last year after telling her she deserved to be punished for the way she had spoken to him.

The 24-year-old stonemason punched her to the head and hit her with a plastic chair and a saucepan.

Police went there the next day after another violent episode. But within minutes of them leaving Cottington forced his way in.

After the woman’s two-year-old daughter awoke Cottington gave her 20 seconds to put her back to bed or he would stab them.

“She saw him standing over the cot with a bread knife in his hand,” said Mr Burge.

He then stabbed the mum-of-two in her left shoulder and slashed her twice on her thigh. Her four-month-old daughter was in the home at the time.

The victim was taken to King’s College Hospital in London for treatment. A blood vessel was punctured.

Imposing an indefinite restraining order, Judge Jeremy Carey said: “If ever there was a case where two people should not have contact between them, this is it.”

Cottington has two previous convictions for assault causing actual bodily harm involving him biting other ex-partners.
