Plans for former Aylesford Newsprint site revealed at planning exhibition

Plans to build up to 450 homes on the former Aylesford Newsprint site have been unveiled.

Initially three ideas were put forward for the 100 acre plot, one for commercial use only and two proposing a mix of housing and employment space, ranging from 350 to 500 homes.

Now planning agents Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH) has revealed its favoured scheme, which would see 120,000sq m dedicated to business use and the southern part, flanking the M20, used for up to 450 houses.

The proposals include the construction of a doctors’ surgery, investment in schooling and work to improve transport links.

Mark Dodds, head of planning at LSH, said: “I am delighted that we are now able to bring forward more concrete proposals to get this site back in to use.”

“We think a mixed-used site, with a big focus on commercial premises generating employment opportunities, with high-quality houses, will be a bonus for the community.

We are particularly pleased to be able to invest in the area through a new local centre.

“We will continue to consult with councillors, residents and local businesses throughout this process.”

The paper mill closed last February making 300 workers redundant. At a public exhibition in March, more than 350 residents came to give their views on how the site could be brought back into use.

While most visitors appeared to support development, a recurring concern was about extra traffic in the area.

In a KentOnline poll asking readers which option they preferred for the site, the option for a larger amount of housing was the least popular choice of the three with just 18% of people in support. More than half wanted to see the site kept entirely for industry.

The public exhibition continues at Church Farm Hall in New Hythe Lane, Aylesford from 10am to 2pm today (Saturday).

A planning application is expected to be submitted to Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council on behalf of administrators KPMG in July following feedback from the public.
