Malling brothers compete in Rochester boxing match in memory of brain tumour patient Jayden Powell

Brothers of a cancer patient hope they have done him proud after competing in a boxing match to help raise funds for a charity in his name.

Callum and Liam Powell from East Malling participated in Box-tec Promotions' charity event on Sunday, October 16 where they entered the ring to raise money for FamilyForeverJP.

The charity is named in honour of their brother, Jayden, who died on August 16, 2018, after battling a year-long struggle with a brain tumour.

Co-founders and parents, Stephen and Hayley Powell, relaunched their charity this year after their initial launch in 2019 was halted by Covid.

The boxing match was the second event the charity has organised after a successful sponsored tough mudder race in September which raised more than £5,000.

Held at the Casino rooms in Rochester, Callum, 21, and Liam, 14, each competed in a fight consisting of three rounds.

Callum has fought in an amateur match previously but for Liam it was his first time.

Callum won his fight, knocking out his opponent in the second round while Liam took his bout to a tie.

Callum said: "The fight went really well.

"The best bit was the knockout in the second round which I won.

"I had the biggest smile on my face all night long after that."

Liam said: "The best bit about the night was all my friends being there to cheer me on

"I felt nervous at first but by the second round my nerves had settled.

"It went well, though there were a couple of bits throughout the fight I would change.

"For the next one I am going to train really hard."

Stephen and Hayley were there to cheer their sons on.

Stephen said: "I was shocked by both of them.

"Hayley was especially nervous though when Liam fought."

Callum and Liam said they were proud to compete for their brother, adding: "We hope Jayden is looking down on us."

The event itself raised more than £2,000 with hundreds of people in attendance.

It even offered the crowd a chance to see celebrity boxing referee Ian John-Lewis.

Stephen said: "What Box-Tec did for us was absolutely amazing.

"They set up the ring, the event, all of the lighting, everything, it was awesome, absolutely awesome.

"It's heart-warming to see this sort of event work through our charity and it was unbelievable seeing so many people coming out to support us.

"There must've been more than 400 people there.

"We still have money coming in."

FamilyForeverJP is hoping to run another boxing event with Box-Tec in March, with Liam and Callum both hoping to compete once again.
