Blaze from campfire gets out of hand

by Lynn Cox

A bonfire in a children’s camp got out of control and spread to a large area of woodland.

Firefighters from Strood fire station were called out to deal with the blaze in woodland in Cliffe Woods, Haven Street, Rochester, at about 6.45pm yesterday (Sunday).

When they arrived they found a large area of the ground, which was covered in pine needles, alight.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The fire was quite a way into the woods and so it was difficult to get water to the site.

“We called for assistance and a crew from Hoo came out and helped us shuttle water to the scene.

“I’d say the fire spread to about 100 square metres of woodland as there were lots of pine needles on the ground.

“The kids had built a camp and lit a bonfire, but it spread a long way.

“I think what they don’t realise is that at this time of year everything is tinder-dry an catches alight quickly.

“Putting out fires like this is a drain on our resources.”
