A popular grocery shop is shutting down after 20 years of trading.

India House, in New Road, Chatham, will close for the final time on Tuesday.

Owner Usha Sheikh decided to close the business as the building she leases has been given planning permission to be converted into flats.

The 54-year-old, who has run the shop for 16 years, did consider moving to another location but believes the time has come to give up the business.

Mother-of-two Mrs Sheikh, who lives in Leybourne Road, Strood, said: “I have done this for 16 years and it’s been very successful.

“I did consider moving but then I thought about it and decided it was time to retire from this shop. I feel both happy and sad about it.”

Over the years Mrs Sheikh, who is married to Medway Council employee Abdul, 52, has expanded the shop to cater for customers of all backgrounds.

She said: “I have met lots of people over the years and built up good relationships. I’ve really enjoyed it and the best part is interacting with the customers. People have been getting emotional when I’ve told them I’m shutting the shop.

“I want to thank everyone who’s been a customer over the years.”
