Former heavyweight champion Frank Bruno helped raise funds for a soldiers’ charity when he joined paranormal investigators at one of Medway’s oldest sites.

The former boxer joined more than 140 visitors to the Napoleonic Fort Amherst in Chatham raising more than £2,000 for Help for Heroes.

Various paranormal investigations were carried out through the night by leading experts including best-selling author Jacky Newcomb, known as The Angel Lady, and paranormal researcher, author and historian Richard Felix.

Organiser and Medway representative for Help for Heroes, Steve Craddock (pictured), said: “Frank Bruno was superb, he was an absolute gentleman and nothing was too much trouble for him.

“People seemed to really enjoy themselves, so it was an excellent evening. Richard gave us a fantastic social context to the evening and Kings Ferry coach company provided a luxury coach at a reduced price for us.”

Mr Craddock, a former Royal Engineer, has now helped to raise more than £80,000 in two years while the Help for Heroes charity has raised more then £40 million despite only starting two and a half years ago.

About £2,200 was raised through the paranormal evening.

He has helped organise a number of charity events including a football match, golf day, cycle ride across France and boat trip on the Kingswear Castle and has been nominated for a Pride in Medway award for his efforts.

His next event will be his annual fundraising golf day at Chart Hills golf club in Biddenden on Thursday, May 20. If you’d like to sponsor a hole or take part call the club on 01580 292222.
