Gillingham boss Mark Stimson says Gillingham must defend properly against Huddersfield

by Luke Cawdell

Gillingham boss Mark Stimson has warned his team to defend properly on Saturday or face the consequences.

The Gills have seriously under-performed away from home so far and visit Huddersfield’s Galpharm Stadium – a ‘graveyard’ for numerous defences this season.

Stimson’s side have conceded the most away goals in League 1 while Huddersfield have scored more at home than any other team.

He said: "They play good football and get the ball out wide. Our full-backs will have to be up for the challenge because if they’re not on their game, we could get destroyed.

"It’s not just the defenders, though, it’s the whole side and the strikers need to do their defensive duties as well."

Gillingham have picked up just one point from a possible 30 on the road so far and their hopes aren’t helped by the two-game suspension of centre-back Josh Gowling, pictured.

Mark Bentley is expected to fill in at the back and Stimson has hinted that he may be ready to throw in some inexperienced faces to try and turn their away form around.

Youngsters Jack Payne and Luke Rooney will be on standby.

Defender Garry Richards is back in training after recovering from injury and he will return to the bench if fit. Otherwise, Stimson could recall Tom Wynter from a loan spell at Dover.
