Public consultation opens for masterplan to support 10,000 new homes on Hoo Peninsula near Rochester

People can now have their say about a raft of projects to support 10,000 homes in an area over the next 30 years.

The Hoo Development Framework includes an overview of what could be built on the Hoo Peninsula, near Rochester, including new education, healthcare, arts, leisure, and sports facilities to support the new housing.

The consultation period was confirmed at Medway Council’s full council meeting on September 15 and will give residents, businesses and stakeholders the chance to give their views on the document.

It will allow people to see how the area could potentially grow and change, and what the future of the peninsula could look like in addition to the £170m Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF) bid to back road and rail improvements.

The development framework focuses on critically important investments in new community facilities across the peninsula, as well as new homes and improved public transport links and roads for Chattenden and High Halstow.

The proposals also include two new two-form entry primary schools and a new eight-form entry secondary school.

This is along with the possible relocation and expansion by one-form entry of Chattenden primary school, and the expansion of High Halstow primary school by one-form entry.

Cllr Alan Jarrett, leader of Medway Council, said: "The Hoo Development Framework is a comprehensive long-term vision of a sustainable future for the peninsula with the infrastructure to support vibrant communities and protect and enhance the area’s green spaces.

"The government currently requires us to build 28,475 homes in Medway over the next 17 years, which I know is a concern.

"However, I hope this blueprint will help allay worries and demonstrate our commitment to creating high quality, sustainable communities.

"We have adopted a landscape-led approach to development and are confident this will ensure that communities on the peninsula are connected, vibrant and sustainable, with attractive built environment.
