Motorists are being warned to expect delays tonight as a huge transformer is taken from Chatham Docks to the National Grid substation in Kemsley.

Drivers are being urged to find alternative routes as police escort a lorry carrying the 428-ton generator to the site.

The convoy will leave Gillingham at about 10pm Friday and travel along the A289 to the A2 and then down the A278 towards junction 4 of the M2.

At the Hempstead Valley roundabout it will reverse along the rest of Hoath Way along the opposite carriageway.

No traffic will be allowed on or off at junction 4 of the M2 during this part of the journey which will take around two hours.

The load will come off the M2 at junction 3 (Blue Bell Hill) and will join the M20 at junction 6. It will come off at junction 7 for the A249 and head towards Detling Hill.

Police will stop traffic at the M20/A249 roundabout to allow the load to get to the top of Detling Hill. Traffic will be allowed to follow the load along the A249.

t will come off at the Iwade junction where it will stop along the Old Ferry Road until 3pm on Sunday.

It will then be escorted back down the A249 and come off at the junction for Kemsley and to its destination just off Ypres Drive.
