A prisoner who was allegedly punched during a fight at Rochester Prison died seven days later in hospital.
The man, who has been named as 26-year-old Frazer Stent, was allegedly assaulted at the jail in Fort Road, on Sunday, October 12.
Stent was taken to hospital after the alleged attack and died a week later on Sunday, October 19, but details have only just emerged.
Officers from Kent Police immediately launched an investigation and arrested another prisoner, a 23-year-old, on suspicion of assault.
After questioning he was bailed until February, but was returned to prison.
A police spokesman said: "Kent Police is investigating a reported assault at Rochester Prison on October 12.
"The victim, a man in his 20s, was allegedly punched.
"A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and bailed until February.
"The victim has since died and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances around the death."
A Prison Service spokesperson added: "As with all deaths in custody, there will be an investigation by the independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman."
HMP Rochester became a dual purpose facility in 2011 - catering for young offenders and adult category C prisoners.
Stent was serving time for burglary offences.
