A lost memory stick revealed information on more than 1,000 school pupils at Rochester Grammar School.

According to the BBC, it included the names, years, school house, date of birth, email address, special educational needs, target and attainment grades and whether they speak English.

The school has referred itself to the Information Commissioner’s Office and sent a letter to parents explaining the what has happened.

A spokesperson for the Trust said: “We place the highest premium possible on data security and have always been clear to all staff that we consider it to be of the utmost importance.

“It is therefore exceptionally disappointing that on this occasion our strict policies and procedures, which all members of staff have been made aware of and have received training on, were not followed.

“We would like to apologise to every student, and their families, for this incident.

"We can provide parents with the data on their child that was lost and would like to reassure them that, although the loss is unacceptable, the information gives no access to student systems.

“We have filed a report with the Information Commissioner’s Office and have immediately instigated a full review of all of the Trust’s data security policies and procedures so that this cannot happen again.”

The stick was handed into the school by a member of the public.
