When thinking of Medway, many people picture Rochester Castle and cathedral while others remember its military and naval history.

And some think of notorious beggar Billy the Quid.

When it comes to getting something memorable inked on your body celebrating the Towns, people’s choices aren’t always that obvious.

Lee Carroll, of Chatham, has “Got A Pand’ scribed across the back of his left thigh next to Sukhvender Singh Deo’s beaming face, immortalising his catchphrase.

The father-of-three wanted something original, so he decided to get Billy’s mugshot permanently drawn on by Connor Armstrong, from Moogs Tattoos in Mr Green’s Barbers in The Delce, Rochester.

Mr Carroll said: “I love it. I got it three months ago.

“I wanted to do a tattoo that no one else has done. I said Billy the Quid, my mate loved the idea, so he did it.”

Tattoo artist Mr Armstrong, 23, said: “It’s probably the most weird tattoo I have done.

“We were talking about random people we could tattoo, as I have a portrait of Dot Cotton on the back of my leg.

“It was a bit difficult, like any portrait.”

Mr Carroll added: “I’ve shown Billy and he loves it too.”

Charlotte Giles shows she is proud of her roots with her “Made in Medway” tattoo on her thigh.

The 22-year-old, of Walderslade, said: “I just got it as a joke holiday tattoo in Kavos. My best mate has a matching one.”

“I don’t regret it. It brings memories with it and everyone thinks it’s funny anyway.”

Bus driver Steven Johnson has taken Medway to Scotland with his tattoo of Gillingham ice hockey team Invicta Dynamos’ logo.

The 51-year-old said: “I wanted a tattoo but couldn’t think what to get.

“I chose the team logo as I was, at the time, transporting them to away games. I drove them for about 10 years.”

Mr Johnson, who used to live in Railway Street, Gillingham, and now lives in Inverness, is still a bus driver.

Lee Terry, 39, of Mierscourt Road, Rainham, has St George in front of Rochester Castle.

The husband and father-of-two said: “I wanted something to do with England. I wanted St George and I didn’t want any old castle in the background - I wanted Rochester Castle.”

Mr Terry had it done just a few weeks ago at Medway Tattoo in Rochester.
