Two Medway MPs defied the government last night in a key vote on Europe.

Mark Reckless (pictured left) and Tracey Crouch backed calls for a referendum on Britain's membership with the European Union in the House of Commons.

Gillingham and Rainham MP Rehman Chishti, also a Tory, backed the government.

Conservative MPs were the subject of a three-line whip - a demand that they support the government.

Prime Minister David Cameron won the vote comfortably, but it was the largest ever rebellion by his party on the issue. As many as 81 Conservatives voted for the referendum.

The motion called for a referendum to be held to ask people whether or not Britain should stay in the EU, leave or renegotiate its membership.

The debate and vote was sparked by a petition that gained more than 100,000 signatures.
