Twelve-year-old Nathan Mitchell will get the chance of a lifetime when he carries the flame through Rochester.

The Howard School pupil will get his hands on the flame at around 9.12am on Corporation Street.

Dozens of friends, family and teachers from his school will line the route to cheer the sport-mad youngster on.

Nathan was nominated by his school because they thought he best embodied the Olympic spirit. He represents the school in football, rugby and athletics.

His mum Louise has bought Nathan’s torch so he will have a memento from the day.

She said: "We just decided he had to keep it. This is a once in a lifetime things and he’ll never do it again. It will be a great story to tell."

Another one of those who will be a part of the flame’s journey through the Towns is Wouldham All Saints Primary School head Carl Fitter, who lives in Cliffe.

Mr Fitter will have an early start, as he is due to hold the torch just after 8am in Skinner Street, Gillingham.

He has run the London Marathon more than 10 times, and prepares for them by racing the school bus.

Mr Fitter, 43, said: "I’ve got my special suit, it all seems a bit unreal. I think I’ll be quite nervous on the day really.

"I’ve done the London Marathon, but you’re one of a large group of people, you’re the centre of attention here."

Mr Fitter has also bought the torch he will be carrying, and the school will be holding its own version of the relay to allow the children to hold the torch as well as see it.
