New Chatham manager Paul Foley has started to build his new-look squad.

The former VCD boss has returned to his old club to sign five new players, with player/coach Kevin Watson already confirmed as moving to Maidstone Road.

Foley has signed keeper James Tedder, striker Danny Penny, midfielder Gary Ward, winger Nick Hegley and full-back Jason Barton.

He also confirmed that Penny will be captain next season with Ward the vice-captain.

Foley said: "Danny was my skipper at VCD and is a strong and skilful forward who will give the side its focal point, bringing others into the game.

"Gary will be Danny’s vice captain and is an extremely hard-working and skilful midfielder who played over 300 times for the Oakwood club."

Maidstone-based Hegley has played at a higher level earlier in his career and enjoyed a successful campaign with VCD last season.

Foley added: "He was one of the first to agree to come to Maidstone Road despite having other offers on the table.

"Not only was he VCD’s top scorer but also the players’ player, and is really up for the challenge."

On the subject of bringing keeper Tedder back to Maidstone Road, Foley said: "He has been my first choice for a keeper since the day I took over."
