Pensioner killed on road named

A pensioner killed after being in collision with a lorry last week has been named locally as Joseph Geoghegan.

The 77-year-old from Rainham, also known as Mike, was killed last week when he was hit by a dumper truck outside the Roko Health Club in Watling Street, Gillingham, between the Bowaters and Will Adams roundabouts.

He was taken to hospital but later died from his injuries.

It is believed Mr Geoghegan was a member of WALDARA, the Walderslade Active Retirement Association.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 2.10pm on Wednesday. The man was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital but passed away.

The road was closed while forensic investigations took place and was reopened just after 9.30pm.

Police have not yet revealed the man's identity, and an inquest is not expected to open until tomorrow (Tuesday).

Kent Police's serious collision investigation unit is appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information can call the unit on 01622 798538.
